Durango Dance Link Internship
Mentor Interview with Jessica Perino
LINK Project Proposal
I am interning at Durango Dance in Durango, Colorado. They are a dance studio that prepares all year for one big recital at the end of the year. They also house many adult classes and a competitive ballet company. They are open because they believe that dance is a good outlet, sport, and life for girls who desire it to experience. My mentor will be Jessica Perino. She is a teacher at the studio and she is also in charge of the finances and contact with parents and students. I really hope that she will be able to teach me what running a studio and having dance as your pain occupation will be like.
I have been considering having a dance career since I was in 5th grade and I am very much on the border about it. I am hoping that this experience will verify that dream or help me look past it. When I come back to school, if I decide dance is not my destiny, I will put more focus and energy into my science and math classes, since that would be my other option. My project will be a promo video recorded and edited by yours truly. Durango Dance does not have advertising and they have been meaning to, so I will begin that project for them.
I will not need anything new in order to complete my project, just practice on creating videos. I will be contacting my friends who make videos if I have questions, but the actual videography will not be a challenge. In order to complete my video, I will spend a week videoing the classes and behind the scenes of a studio. For the rest of my free time I am at Durango Dance I will be editing my video and refining it in order to create the most beautiful work I can.
Some challenges that I have experienced while looking for an internship were the long distance traveling, and actually figuring out what was possible for me. When I first started looking I really wanted to intern at a zoo so I could work with animals. However, every zoo that I looked at would not allow a person under 17 to intern with them and most programs happened during the summer.
Overall, I am extremely excited about being able to pursue a possible career choice for myself and finding my path with this internship. I am also excited to take time off of school, in order to relax and take the opportunity to really focus on my honors projects. Spending time with my mentor will be one of my favorite things, especially since we already have a good relationship and will be behinds the scenes of every dance recital.
